Shipping and Receiving Clerk

Purpose

Kangaroo Manufacturing is a fast-growing toy & novelty e-tailer. The shipping and receiving clerk position verifies, keeps records on incoming and outgoing shipments and prepares items for shipment by performing the following duties to quality and productivity standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

  • Read and comprehend routing guides from multiple sources
  • Operates lift trucks or hand trucks to convey, move or hoist materials to proper departments or areas.
  • Look through work orders to determine order picking activities and pick orders according to the specific instructions provided.
  • Match order information in order cards with information on picked items to ensure conformity.
  • Ascertain the quality and quantity of picked items and ensure that they are safely delivered to the delivery pallet.
  • Select the method of consignment utilizing knowledge of shipping procedures, routes, and rates.
  • Arrange for a carrier vehicle or pickup.
  • Post weight and shipment charges.
  • Maintain files of shipping records.
  • Trace the missing or lost shipments.
  • Assist in loading and unloading trucks and determining safe ways of stacking items on the truck and safely retrieving items.
  • Unpacks, examines, and routes incoming shipments, rejects damaged items, records shortages, and corresponds with shipper to rectify damages and shortages. Receives and processes all defective parts returned for replacement or credit.
  • Maintains inventory of shipping materials and supplies.
  • Performs all computer functions necessary to track various aspects of goods.
  • Responsible for making arrangements for pick up by the carrier specified on the customer’s purchase order, which is conveyed to the shipping clerk by final inspection via the shipping instructions.
  • Reports defective materials or questionable conditions to the department supervisor.
  • Responsible for keeping an adequate supply of shipping materials on hand always.
  • Maintains the work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition and follows prescribed safety regulations.

Competencies (Behavioral and Technical Skill Requirements)

  • Proficient in MS Access and MS Excel
  • Must have general knowledge of warehouse and shipping procedures
  • Must possess general knowledge of working with common carriers and brokers
  • Must be proficient in data entry and computer applications
  • Ability to work effectively with staff at all levels
  • Ability to quickly learn the organization’s structure, business processes and systems
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent communications skills both verbal and written
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and sense of urgency
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to prioritize.
  • Willingness and ability to work under pressure and meet critical deadlines in a fast-moving business
  • Ability to multi-task and work efficiently with minimum supervision

Education and/or Experience

Associates degree preferred or will consider equivalent work experience
2-4 years of experience in logistics or warehousing
3 years experience with common carriers and brokers
Excellent research and problem-solving skills

Physical Demands

Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 lbs repetitively

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Environment requires the ability to work in a fast-paced warehouse where problems occur, and volumes are heavy. The warehouse environment requires the use of the phone and computer frequently.  Tasks do not expose employee to physically unpleasant or hazardous conditions.
